Our History
More Than a School—A Living Legacy
Founded in 1889 and relocated to Observatory in 1924, Sacred Heart College has always been more than a school—it’s a movement. A place where generations were shaped by values that defied apartheid, embraced diversity before it was law, and opened doors when others shut them.
In the 1970s, we became one of South Africa’s first non-racial independent schools. In the 1980s, we welcomed girls. In the 1990s, we taught the children of returning exiles. And in 2008, we opened our arms to refugee children during a wave of xenophobic violence
Today, Sacred Heart stands tall as a Johannesburg Cultural Legacy Site, honored with a Blue Plaque—a symbol of our unshakable place in the nation’s story.
The Sacred Heart College Alumni Association (SHCAA) invites you to reconnect with that legacy. Whether you sang in choir, played marimbas, played sports on the fields, or found your voice in the classroom—this is your home.
